Prespawn Bass Fishing in the Grass – Two Baits that Stand Out For Grass Bass Fishing in the Prespawn

Prespawn bass fishing can be an exciting way to fish and especially when you find good healthy grass.

Looking for underwater routes or highways to spawning bays or protected areas with hard bottom and shallow water can put you in the pathway of bass moving up to spawn.

There are a lot of baits that will work for this type of fishing, but a couple that stick out to me are both in the crankbait family.

Crankbaits for Prespawn Grass Bass Fishing

The Lipless Crankbait

The lipless crankbait is well known for bringing results when it comes to fishing in the grass. This has proven super effective in lakes around the country.

Burning a lipless over the grass and allowing it to get hung while ripping it out can bring some amazing reaction strikes. Another key to this bait is the flat side and vibration that it puts out.

The Hybrid Hunter Crankbait

Several years back Strike King launched the Hybrid Hunter crankbait and I was not sold. It is a funny-looking bait and I just didn’t see a point in fishing it. Then I saw some results and picked up a few for myself.

This is my first season fishing the Hybrid Hunter and it already has a place in my heart and arsenal.

There are a handful of reasons that I am sold but I will only cover two.

First, they swim more horizontally and don’t get bogged down in the grass like other crankbaits do.

The second is that they vibrate like a lipless and draw those core reaction strikes when allowed to float out of the vegetation and then popped. It acts a lot like a lipless but is actually easier to fish.

The Hybrid Hunter Story

I have fished it in the grass here in Arizona on several outings now and look forward to many more. The last time I went out to a lake with some grass lines and bays, I was able to put the Hybrid Hunter to work.

In fact, the last time I was out it was all that we could catch them on. I’m confident that we would have zeroed out without this unique crankbait.

Prespawn Grass Fishing Final Thoughts

The prespawn is an exciting period to catch bass in and by fishing the right lures in the grass on pathways to spawning bays you can have some amazing fishing.

That said, sometimes it still gets tough and you need a bait that brings a core reaction. Two of my favorite grass baits are the lipless crankbait and the Strike King Hybrid Hunter.

Go grab some and give them a go this season.

Let me know what you think.

To your success,
